Mike’s Legacy
In January 2024, Michael Gill’s untimely death left behind a legacy of love, humanity and selflessness. We, his friends and family, want to continue that legacy with the Mike Gill Scholarship – an endowed scholarship involving his high school and college alma maters; Chaminade College Prep (’85) and the University of Dayton (’89).
Mike was a dynamic guy. A husband, father, son, brother, lawyer, intellectual, Catholic, music lover, storyteller and friend.
While creating an endowed scholarship is an audacious goal, it reflects Mike’s personal and professional accomplishments. To honor his journey, the Mike Gill Scholarship will support a Chaminade graduate, attending UD.
Mike
Mike’s enthusiasm for life was contagious. His love of learning, fellowship and growth was an example for everyone lucky enough to know and spend time with him.
The University of Dayton adage of “LEARN, LEAD, SERVE” is a touchstone to the legacy he leaves for us all.
Mike embodied – in the most complete way – the Chaminade motto, “Esto Vir,” translated to “Be a man,” and the UD motto, “Pro Deo et Patria,” translated to “For God and Country.”
St. Louis
Growing up in St. Louis shaped Mike’s view of community, hard work and purpose.
Even though he lived in Washington DC for his adult life, Mike was always connected to his hometown; from staying close with high school friends from Chaminade to reading the Post-Dispatch online to keeping up with Cardinals baseball.
Mike always cherished his St. Louis roots, the memories and friendships from the place he always called home.
Dayton
Mike’s undergraduate years were spent at the University of Dayton – a Catholic, Marianist university in Ohio.
It was at UD that Mike developed his lifelong infatuation with learning and knowledge. While he went on to earn a Masters degree in Public Policy from Johns Hopkins University and a law degree from Catholic University, UD was where Mike found the perfect balance of socialization and education.
At UD, Mike forged a love of fellowship, an understanding in what we can all accomplish by working together, and a commitment to the common good.
Washington, DC
Mike truly loved Washington DC; where he met his wife, Kristina and where they raised their children, Sean, Brian and Annika. Without a doubt, family was Mike’s highest priority and passion.
Embracing our nation’s capital as home for over 30 years, Mike loved the policy aspects and political machinations of the area. Mike was especially proud of his international finance regulatory work as Chief of Staff and COO of the Commodities Futures Trading Commission.
Mike also worked to address some of the challenges facing Washington DC, serving on boards of multiple charities as well as the DC Board of Elections.
